Stocking Toppers

I've got some more knitting crossed off the Christmas list!  These have actually been done for awhile, it's just getting a moment when the kids aren't going to come barging in the door for me to take a picture and post them.

These are what I've created for the top of the kid's stockings.  My kids don't believe in Santa, (*gasp!* I know!) so it's no big thing for me to have obviously momma-made things in there.  There will be no crisis Christmas morning, or me having to make up some lies, "Oh, well, Santa asked me to put those in there for him, because he doesn't know how to knit!"

Jayden is getting a ninja.  He spotted the pattern for this ninja when we were out on the shop hop and has been asking for him every since.  I love how he turned out!

And for Willow I was going to create a different little monster out of the same book as the ninja, but then I ran across this pattern from DangerCrafts, and it was just too perfect to pass up.  Meet Daphne and baby Delilah Monster. (sorry for the bad lighting picture, but it is actually cloudy and overcast here today.  I love it!  But that means no natural light coming in my window and that means yellowy picture instead of white.  But I don't claim to be any sort of a photographer, so you can't hold me to anything, but even I can see a difference in the ninja and the monsters!  Anyway, moving on.....)
They were both suppose to have jagged teeth smiles, but Jayden saw me finish Daphne and said that Delilah needed a much more happy face.  Is this how they see me?  Angry teeth mom and happy kids???  Bleh, let's just not go there today!  :)  The great thing about Daphne and Delilah, is that Daphne has a Delilah shaped pocket for carrying her around, which is going to come in great handy when we fly to Washington because Delilah will probably get tired of walking everywhere.
18 days until Christmas!  I'm ready! (well, almost...back to my knitting)

Christmas Hats

I have almost got all my Christmas knitting done!  And it's not even December yet!  I'm never finished this early, so I obviously didn't take on enough projects and will have to come up with some more.  Because let's just face it, it just won't feel like Christmas if I'm not knitting on a deadline!

Every year I make the kids new hats and put them in their stockings.  And for the most part, they aren't big fans of the things I make.  So last year, they picked out the hat pattern, went to the yarn store and picked out the yarn they wanted, and still they didn't really like them.  I'm constantly shoving them on their heads and they are constantly ripping them off and throwing them in a corner.  And since I've pretty much decided that I'm not going to let them hurt my feelings about it, I press on and continue to make them new hats.  Because really, I love knitting and it gives me reason to try out something new to see if maybe this will be the year they will LOVE their knitted hats!

So this year, I may have gone a bit wild, but I'm just sure these are going to be their all time favorite hats!  This year, I have created Mohawk Hats!
Jayden's is in purple and gold because he's slightly obsessed with the "Go Huskies" as he calls them.  And Willow's is pink because I couldn't find sparkle yarn.  :)

They are going to love them, right?????  :)

Christmas Tree 2012

Yesterday, we went in search of our Christmas Tree at Windy Knoll Tree Farm.  This year, just like every year here, we got a Scotch Pine.  Growing up in Washington, we got Noble Firs and I have to say no other tree feels like the right Christmas Tree unless it's a fir!  Unfortunetly, they have to get those shipped in here and I'm not really that excited about paying those prices for a tree or picking one off a lot.  We like to chop down our own trees!  So, we settle for a pine and a great smelling Christmas tree candle, because pine's just don't smell like firs do!

Willow's 4!

Willow turned 4 on November 20th!  4!?! Can you believe it???

Since weather is so unpredictable in November and Willow wanted to have a party and I wasn't sure I wanted to have a bunch of kids inside my house, we decided to have her party at Pump It Up!  I was a little hesitant at first, because of the cost, but we booked her party in the middle of the week and I found a coupon, and in the end, both Royal and I decided it was totally worth it.  The kids had tons of fun and I didn't have a huge mess to clean up afterwards.

We started the morning off with presents.  I think it's torture to make them wait all day to open presents, so I convinced Royal to go to work a little late and let Willow rip into her presents right when she got up.
She got a lot of Cinderella stuff.  And she has been prancing around in one of her two Cinderella dresses and shoes pretty much since her birthday.  She wears her "glass slippers" out of the house whenever we have to go somewhere.  And she keeps telling me I can be the Step Mother, and I keep asking if I can be the Fairy Godmother, but she denies me and tells me to be the Step Mother.  Guess I'll just keep bossing her around!
She also got this awesome princess tent from her Uncle Gabe and Aunt Brynn.
And Nana made her this new quilt for her bed!
Then in the evening we met up with Willow's friends at Pump it Up!  It is quite convenient that most of her friends have an older sibling that is Jayden's age, so Jayden had lots of friends to play with too.

After a whole bunch of jumping, we headed back to the party room to eat cake and ice cream, sing happy birthday, and open presents!  It was a very fun and busy birthday!
HAPPY 4th BIRTHDAY, WILLOW!!!!

Turkey Trot

The Turkey Trot is a 10 mile race that I've wanted to do since moving to Wichita, but it falls so close to Willow's birthday, usually on her birthday weekend, that I've never actually done it.   This year though, we are doing her birthday party on her actual birthday during the week, so I decided to run the race!  I was especially excited since I missed the Prairie Fire Half last month.  I had plans to do that one, but when we got back from Washington, it was still so hot and humid here, it literally took me about 5 weeks before I could run 5 miles without feeling like I was dying.  I don't remember it taking me that long to acclimate before...I must be getting old.... So, I didn't have enough time to get my mileage bumped up before the actual race.  And 13.1 miles is a long enough race when you actually have trained and feel ready for it!

I gave myself about a month to train for the Turkey Trot.  I'd been running up to 5 miles pretty consistently and felt good about that distance again, and I ran with my running group once when they met early and ran 6.5 miles.  But the rest of the time I trained by myself, and did a couple long runs of 7 and 9 miles.  And so mentally going into this race, I was ready to run it by myself, and I really didn't feel the need to push myself or beat any time.  I was just planning on taking it as a nice 10 mile jog. (does a nice 10 mile jog exist????)  Thankfully Royal bought me a new iPod Nano for our anniversary after I accidentally sent my old one through the washing machine, and I got some new music recommendations from Jordan so I felt like I was ready to go bust it out.

I knew a couple people, mostly from Mommy Movement Fitness, who were going to run today too, and met up with them at the beginning of the race.
The person on the far left, is Jayne, and she is actually Willow's swim teacher!  Then on the other side of me is Kristen, and Stacy, and Tonya.

The race actually felt pretty good.  I'd heard warnings that the beginning was super crowded and to be prepared to be frustrated for a good couple miles until it spaced out.  But it wasn't so bad.  There was some jostling around, but they had shut down the roads so we weren't all crammed up on the sidewalks and running paths.  Jayne took off like a rocket at the beginning of the race, so we lost her real early.  Then we lost Kristen and Stacy when we ran past Tonya's car and she jetted off to throw her phone in it.  I also ran into a couple of my neighbors in the middle of the race.  I almost felt like my dad, waving and saying hi to all these people, he would of been so proud.  :)  Tonya and I ended up running the whole thing together, and if you've ever run with Tonya, or worked out with her for that matter (worked out with her, not when she's teaching!), all she does is talk!  It was really nice to have someone to talk to and pull you along when your legs start trying to slow down.  Well, we ran together until like mile 9, when she started trying to keep up with a bunch of teenagers and well I just couldn't maintain an 8 minute mile after logging 9, so I put my earbuds in to try and help me pick up the pace for the last mile.  And this always seems to happen, a certain song comes on at just the right part of the race and I'm like, "Yes! That is how I am feeling right now!"  And even though I am so sick of listening to the song, I never take it out of my running playlist for the very purpose.  The song that started blaring in my ears right as I put my earbuds in around mile 9.25.....Misery by Maroon 5.  "I'm in misery, and there ain't nobody who can comfort me"  Oh yeah.  In case you were wondering, that is pretty much what mile 9 feels like.

But I finished with a time of 1:35, which is about a 9:20 minute mile, which is about average for me for this distance.  I didn't try and push myself too hard and when I got done I still felt really good.  Other than my legs were a wee bit more tired than when I started.   So, it pretty much was a nice easy 10 mile jog!

Cold Snap

Well, I *think* the cold weather is here to stay.  We were still having upper 70 days, then we had the bridge day, a day of extreme wind (which I went running in...stupid) and a good thunderstorm as the hot wind from the south collided with the cold wind from the north only to have the north wind win  and bring on winter!  So now we are waking up to cold 20 degree days and warming up to maybe 50.  The kids were kind of excited about it.  They both put on warm coats and headed outside.  Jayden drug a stool and a book outside so he could read outside.  Willow brought a book outside to drive around in her car.
Yay for winter!  Just so you know I will probably be complaining about how cold it is in a little bit.  I'm just never satisfied!  :)

Saturday School

We got a little behind on Jayden's school work for the week, so we used Saturday as a catch up!  Jayden insisted that Royal be his teacher for the day.
At one point Jayden said he needed a snack, so he went upstairs and fixed one for just him and Royal.  A small glass of milk, a tortilla with shredded cheese and pickles, and 2 chocolate covered pretzels.  :)
Willow kept on eye on Royal with a pair of binoculars to make sure he wasn't getting off task. :)
